OSWESTRY Golf Club was alight last Wednesday evening (October 31) as they hosted their first night golf event.
Night golf is nothing new, but this is the first time it’s been hosted in the Oswestry area and the members of popular Shropshire club were out in force to support this inaugural event.
The entry sheet filled up within a week of it being released and anticipation had been growing. The evening went with a bang (literally) as teams were set off with, not your traditional shotgun, but full blown rocket fireworks. All golfers brought their own torch, but thankfully there was a little more lighting put on by the organisers. Tee boxes were lit up, along with hundreds of lights framing the fairways and hazards. Flags were also alight and finally illuminating golf balls, helped ensure the balls were tracked through the air.
But the club didn’t stop there, the ladies’ section, under the watchful eye of head organiser and lady captain Marie Male, went to town on the clubhouse, dressing it in a very impressive halloween theme, to really set off the evening.
Catering was supplied by Paul Slater and a special witches brew was provided alongside the normal bar selection. Members also dressed up in a fine array of costumes and the atmosphere on the night was something to behold. Club captain Steve Ashworth said: “What a great evening. It was fantastic to see the club coming together to support such an interesting idea.
“We’ve worked hard to bring this to the club and we are absolutely delighted by the support shown by the membership.”
Head professional Richard Edwards added: “The members absolutely loved it. What a great idea. It was a fantastic, fun, friendly event, very well organised and extremely competitive, and great to see the members dressed up and really buying into the whole thing.”
