ASHTON-under-Lyne’s A and B teams have completed a superb treble.
Following the A team’s cup final win against Blackley, the B team added the Oldham and District League title to their cup win a few weeks previously too.
Ashton had to beat Stamford at Crompton and Royton to become league champions for the first time since 2007.
Winning the league title also secured the double for the very first time in the club’s history by either their A or B teams.
The cup final was against Brookdale at Denton and with the scores level at 2-2 bad light forced the play to be abandoned with Ashton’s Martin Wild and Alan Newell two up with two holes to play. When the match was resumed two weeks later, Martin holed a long double-breaking putt on the 17th to secure the cup 3-2.
The League Championship final was an equally close affair with Ashton trailing 2-0 before they showed their fighting spirit with Seamus Oddie and Simon Heeley winning 2&1 and Martin Wild and Alan Newell by 3&2 to draw level. It was all down to Glyn Andrew and Brendan Kennedy who were taken to a sudden death finish. The first three extra holes were halved before the Ashton duo kept their nerve to win on the 150-yard fourth hole to complete the historic double.
