BOLTON Old Links GC have won the Red Rose Veterans League for a record third year running. This well established competition is open to players over the age of 60 and draws teams from across Lancashire with Heysham and Knott End to the north, Darwen to the east and Hurlston Hall to the west.
The playing format is fourball betterball with teams consisting of seven pairs with two points being awarded for a win and one point for a halved match.
In a breathtaking final to the season, Bolton Old Links won the league and retained the title for a record breaking third year by the smallest of margins. Victory was far from straightforward as two big points wins from major rival Hurlston Hall left Bolton Old Links needing nine points from their last game away at Bury. They rose to the challenge though as they won five matches to secure 10 points and the title.
Old Links captain Malcolm Burton, who successfully marshalled his 24-man squad over the 18-game season, was quick to thank all players for their effort and support.
He said: “It’s a great win for the club and to make it three in a row is something special. We had some tight games and the final result was very close. However, the main feature has been the enjoyment and camaraderie from the playing of competitive golf in the right spirit and developing lasting friendships with all teams in the league.”
