BROGAN Townend led from the front as the Red Rose bloomed in the England Golf North Region County Match Week at Sandiway.
The newly crowned Lancashire County champion won all her five singles matches, as did Eloise Healey from West Lancs, to help the side to qualify for the England Golf Finals at Frilford Heath in September.
They got off to a flying start, dropping only half a point in their opening three matches but were put to the test by Yorkshire before prevailing 5-4 then beating host county Cheshire by the same margin.
But there was plenty of nail-biting on the final day. After some very close matches the morning foursomes were halved.
Townend swept to a 4&3 win at the top of the order in the singles then Royal Lytham’s Beth Garton followed with a valuable half point. Healey and Pleasington’s Catherine Roberts ensured victory by securing the points on the 15th green.
Meanwhile, Townend who won the Lancashire Women’s Championship at Southport and Ainsdale in May, is back at her Blackburn home after completing the second of a three-year course studying for a multi-disciplinary degree at San Antonio University in Texas.
She revealed: “I may decide to stay in the United States because I’ve made a lot of friends over there.”
And she is also contemplating following her dad Simon into the professional ranks.
