Brookdale junior star is the top man

BROOKDALE junior star Matthew Kay is the new champion of the Oldham and District as he used his local knowledge to good effect over 36 holes of his own course.

Kay was a junior goalkeeper at Manchester City until a knee injury forced him to quit and he decided to try his hand at golf.

He spent two years at Myerscough College doing a golf diploma and also working hard on his game. His dedication paid off when he won the Lancashire Boys Championship at Leyland and followed this up with rounds of 67 and 68 for a 135 total to fend off Crompton and Royton star Gary Melling by three shots to take the prestigious crown at Brookdale.

Kay’s win mirrors the great career of Melling who, at the age of 16, won the Lancashire Schools Championship and in the same year won the Oldham and District title – again at Brookdale.

The Brierley Cup for the best four scores from each club was also won by Brookdale as Kay was well supported by Peter Buckley, Mark Riley and Paul Wood. Matthew Kay with the Oldham and District Champion’s Trophy.
