Car day proves a ‘classic’ at Formby

VISITORS to Formby Golf Club on a recent Saturday could be forgiven for thinking they had strayed into the Goodwood Festival of Speed by mistake as members and friends with classic cars put on a stunning display, described as “the best of motoring down the ages, from ancient to modern.”

Amongst the 36 classics that adorned the car park were a 1927 Bentley Speed 6, of the type that won Le Mans five times, a 1968 Ferrari 275 GTB 4 Cam, a 1973 Ferrari Dino, two 1967 Aston Martin DB6s, one being a Vantage Volante of which only 29 were manufactured, a 1959 Bentley Continental, a Lamborghini Countach and an array of classic Jaguars that included a 1952 XK120, a 1955 XK150, two pristine E Types and a Mark 2 saloon.

MGs and Triumphs had a whole row to themselves with a Triumph TR6 that looked showroom fresh, a Stag, MG TD, two MGA Twin Cams, one a convertible, the other a coupe, and an MGC. Two classic Mercedes Pontons from the late 1950s, a Jensen Interceptor, a Fiat Spyder, a 1951 Cadillac, a little Wolseley Wasp from 1937 and a 1960 Volkswagen Campervan completed the line up.

There were modern supercars too, including three McLaren 650S models, a Ferrari FF, Bentley Continental, Aston Martin Vanquish, Morgan Plus 4, Porsche 911 and Porsche Boxter.

Stuart Leech, Formby Golf Club’s secretary manager, said: “We knew a number of our members and some members and friends of our sister club, Formby Ladies, owned classic motor cars and we thought it would be nice if they were to bring them along to show to other members.

“We didn’t expect such a stunning array of machinery, representing the pinnacle of motoring and motor sport from the 1920s through to the present day with the three McLarens, the modern Aston Martins and Porsches and the Ferrari FF.

“It was a thoroughly enjoyable day, not spoiled by some light rain in the morning which thankfully gave way to an afternoon of blue skies and sunshine, enabling us to enjoy a barbecue on the lawn.

“As part of developing and enhancing the community spirit and membership value here at Formby, we have been putting on a number of different events to give our members a number of different experiences, from family Sunday lunches with entertainment for the children, to a snooker with the stars night which saw John Parrott play Steve Davis, Champagne tasting events, real ale interactive events with our brewery, and many more.

“For members of both golf clubs and their families and friends, the classic car day will live long in the memory.”
