Charity champs complete gruelling challenge

NINE members of Congleton Golf Club embarked on an ‘All the 9s Captain’s Charity Challenge’.

It involved nine members, playing nine holes with nine clubs at nine different nine-hole golf clubs, all in one day!

Captain Chris Wilson, Jack Wilson, Carl Gola, Billy Hunter, Kev Warburton, Paul Fagin, Paul Condliffe, Nick Worrall and club pro Mike Green were accompanied by five members, Malcom Smith, Michael Morrey, Guy Thomas, George Golding and Rob Turner, who very kindly chauffeured the teams around. Brian Smedley kept them all supplied with bacon baps and sandwiches throughout the day. He also laundered the team shirts during the day.

The gruelling challenge began at 3am when they left Congleton and arrived at Crewe Park for the first ball to be teed off at 3.50am by club captain Wilson. This was then followed by visits to Sandbach, Hartford, Cheadle, Avro, Adlington, Gately and Knutsford before finally arriving at Congleton at 8.30pm for the final nine holes.

Captain Wilson was the last to hole out on the final green at 9.45pm to mark the end of a 120-mile round trip.

They were met by a large crowd on the balcony to a rapturous round of applause from family, friends and club members.

A quick glass of Champagne was then followed by a fantastic firework display from Maurice Pitcher and all players and drivers were presented with an engraved hip flask as a memento of the day.

A tired but elated captain said: “It was an emotional end to what was an amazing accomplishment – one that may never again be repeated.

“Heartfelt thanks must go to all the sponsors of this event, from the suppliers of all the clothing and equipment used, Morrisons for the fruit hampers, the club catering staff for the sandwiches, ABB Electricals for the use of the company vehicle and fuel, Moorlands Radio and Radio Stoke for airtime, all the golf courses for their hospitality, family and friends for the superb welcoming home reception, and most of all to all the people who have given money for this amazing charity cause of Douglas Macmillian Hospice, Blurton.

“We raised somewhere in the region of £2,500 for this fantastic cause.”
