CHARLES Banks is the 2018 Midland Senior Amateur Champion after securing victory at Henlle Park last month.
The Stanton-on-the-Wold member carded a second round 68 to add to his opening 73 to win the championship with a total of 141, five shots clear of 2016 champion Bob Aston (Trentham Park). Despite a final round of 69, Hawkstone Park’s Nigel Chesters had to settle for third place on 147.
Joint first-round leader, Martin Cartwright (Fulford Heath) managed to post a level par front nine in round two but faded on the closing holes and had to be content with fourth place.
Cartwright and club-mate Phil White managed to retain the Senior Team Trophy with a one-shot advantage over the Shifnal pairing of Steve Hawke and Ben Gilg. Third place was Jim Chambers and Ian Wilson (Beau Desert).
Henlle Park, hosting the prestigious event for the first time, provided a good test for all the players with fast running fairways and a few tricky pin positions, which meant club selection and positioning on the fairways was paramount to securing a winning score.
Neil Harris, secretary and championship chairman for the Midland Golf Union, said: “This was our first visit to Henlle Park and we were made to feel very welcome. The help and assistance provided by the club and the staff has been second to none. We have been treated very well and the players have enjoyed their experience here.
“Local knowledge would seem to be very important and getting in the right position on the fairway was very important to give the opportunity of posting a good score. We are looking forward to returning again in October when the club host the senior league play-off final.”
