SALFORD’S Mike Waterfield has jetted off to Italy where he will be “driving” more than he bargained for.
Having triumphed over a field of 70 at Worsley Park Marriott Hotel & Country Club during a club competition sponsored by Alfa Romeo, Mike is now flying out to Italy for the final of the Alfa Romeo Golf Challenge in Milan after which he will join his fellow finalists around the test track at Alfa Romeo’s HQ to test his skills behind the wheel.
The qualifying competition, held at Worsley Park late last year, was sponsored by Alfa Romeo who brought a touch of Italian to Manchester with players taken on a test drive in the iconic Italian cars – and the prize of qualification to the final in Italy up for grabs.
Mike, who is due to step up into the position of club president in July, said: “It was a tough day with some challenging conditions, however it was great to come into the clubhouse on top, and to end the day as the winner was absolutely amazing. Our weekend in Italy is going to be incredible with the chance to take on the other regional winners at the finals – I’m hoping to drive straight both on and off the golf course.”
Mike has been a member of Worsley Park golf since it opened 1999, regularly competing at events throughout the year. Darren Mercer, director of golf at Worsley Park, said: “It was a great chance for us to partner with Alfa Romeo and with Mike winning through on the day, we wouldn’t have hoped for a more deserving winner. For those looking to have a chance to also win some big prizes next year, come and talk to our golf team who would me more than happy to chat through all of our members events this year.”
With the team at Alfa Romeo flying the contestants out to Milan, each player will not only be competing for the title of international Alfa Romeo Golf Challenge Champion, but will also be taken on a VIP tour of the Alfa Romeo Museum, a gala dinner and the chance to drive the Alfa Romeo test track.
Mike added; “You can already count me in for next year as defending champion, and as I’ll be working on my driving, both on and off the course, I’ll be once again giving it my all to defend the title and hopefully return to Italy with the team at Alfa Romeo again next year.”
