Emma gets a helping hand from LET

A LIVERPOOL golf professional has received a helping hand towards her dream of becoming a director of golf.

Emma Goddard is to be given a special education grant from the Ladies European Tour, with support from Gateley plc.

The 28-year-old is one of the first recipients of the award, which has been launched as part of the ‘LET’s LEARN’ programme.

This exists to encourage the LET’s members to give thought to their personal development and what might help them in the longer-term as a player or working within golf.

Emma, from Halewood, joined the tour in 2015 and achieved her maiden win on the LET’s Access Series in 2017 at the Riberia Sacra Patrimonio de la Humanidad International Ladies Open.

But the Royal Liverpool-attached player admits that her ambitions to play full-time on the Ladies European Tour have not worked out as she had hoped.

She is now working towards an ASQ Level 5 Diploma in Golf Club Management through the Golf Club Manager’s Association as part of her plans to move into a non-playing role within the sport.

Emma, who started playing golf at the age of eight after finding her grandad’s clubs in the garage, explained: “At some point in the future I would like to be a director of golf and I feel the time is right for me to start working towards that goal. The Gateley Grant will help me to gain the qualification that will give me the knowledge I need.

“I applied for the grant as last year did not go to plan for many reasons so I made the decision to start preparing for a life after playing golf.

“The grant has allowed me to commit to the three-year course earlier than I had planned and would have been able to do financially,” added Emma, who is head professional at Macdonald Portal in Tarporley.

The introduction of the grant-aid scheme is part of the LET’s objective to increase the number of women in decision-making roles in the sport.

It is also consistent with the aims set out in The R&A’s ‘Women in Golf Charter’, to which the LET is a signatory.
