End of an era at Fairfield

WITH the opening of their superb new clubhouse imminent, Fairfield members gathered in force last month to remember the many happy times they have enjoyed over the years in the old one.

It was the last day of action for the old clubhouse and also certain holes on the course, including the par three 18th.

The last shot to the 18th green was taken by club legend Bobby Davenport watched with great interest by club pro Steve Pownell, Ashton pro Colin Boyle, who began his long career in golf as a junior at Fairfield, and John Penlington, who had played such a big part in the club’s long battle for survival in the 1990’s.

Bobby said: “It was great to see such a great gathering of members to enjoy the last day in the old club, including Colin, and many memories were exchanged.”

Steve added: “For once Bobby did not fluff his chip to the 18th pin despite his critical audience and all at the club are now looking forward to a bright future in the fantastic new clubhouse and the re-designed course.”

The original clubhouse was situated on land now occupied by Wright Robinson Sports College and replaced by the current one in 1920. The late Sir Matt Busby opened the club room in 1971.
