Extra special Brogan is Lancs champ

BROGAN Townend snatched victory from the jaws of defeat in the Lancashire County Women’s Championship at Southport & Ainsdale.

The 21-year-old, dormie two down against Pleasington clubmate Catherine Roberts and trailing by that margin for most of the match, dramatically hit back to level the proceeding.

And Brogan, who won the short first with a par in normal time, repeated the score on the second visit to the hole, lagging up with a 30-ft putt after Catherine, champion in 2012 and again the following year, bogeyed after finding a bunker.

“I was in danger of going three down at the short eighth when I missed the green but I chipped the ball from thick rough and putted from 15-ft for a half in par,” she said. “It would have made life a bit difficult if I’d lost it.”

Brogan was still trailing by the same margin when the pair reached the 16th tee, but Catherine found a difficult lie with her drive and conceded the hole.

She lost the next after bunker trouble and a half at last took the game into sudden death.

Brogan, back at her Blackburn home after completing the second of a three-year course studying for a multi-disciplinary degree at San Antonio University in Texas, atoned for an extra hole defeat last year at Clitheroe by West Lancashire’s Hollie Muse, who was on England duty this week,

Meanwhile, she is keen to follow in the spikemarks of her dad, Simon, a PGA professional with an impressive playing record.

But she added: “I may decide to stay in the United States because I’ve made a lot of friends over there.”
