Fab four win in USA

A SHROPSHIRE club has provided the winning team at the prestigious Scottsdale Classic Pro-Am event in America.

For a number of years Mile End Golf Club’s PGA professional James Davies has taken a team to the USA to enter the event organised by The American Golf Holiday tour company. This year the team of Colin Amyes, Paul Davies and Dave Thomas finished in first place.

The 16th annual staging of the popular event served up an exciting finish to match the conclusion of The PGA Tour’s WM Phoenix Open a few days prior.

The tournament was played in near record temperatures in the high eighties throughout the week.

Once again the action packed Pro-Am offered competitors the chance to attend the Saturday “party day” at The WM Open, and this year a record one-day attendance of 201,000 was set for a golf event, with a staggering 618,000 fans passing through the gates during the week. With such massive crowds the event is famous for its raucous atmosphere and is known as the “Greatest Show on Grass”.

Several of the competitors got to watch from SkyBox hospitality units at the 16th hole – renowned for being the loudest hole in golf!

TPC Scottsdale was to be somewhat quieter three days later when the majority of the competitors played a Challenge Day over the immaculate course, which was presented in tournament condition with the grandstands still in place.

All the players raved about the experience, particularly entering ‘The Coliseum’ via the tunnel at the famous par three 16th hole.

In the Pro-Am Team event, the lead changed hands through the week, but a final round of 15 under, following previous rounds of 12, eight and 12 under, would secure Davies and his team a two-shot win from a Surrey-based quartet.

Davies himself also managed a creditable fifth place finish in the pro’s individual event with a four-round total of two-over-par.
