Family affair as duo crowned champs

A FATHER and son from Rainhill have made history at their home club by doing the ‘double’ in this year’s Club Championship.

Des Roberts won Eccleston Park’s Club Championship with a nett aggregate of 136, then eight-year-old son Dean won the Junior Club Championship with the same 136 total.

Dean, a pupil at Rainhill St Ann’s Primary School, became the youngest ever winner after firing a second day nett 63 to win the junior section that included players up to the age of 17.

He started playing at the Merseyside-based club three years ago and has reduced his handicap to 30 already after also winning the club’s Carmichael Cup just a few weeks earlier.

HGV driver dad Des has only been a member since May when he re-joined the club following a two-year break.

The 48-year-old said: “The secret to my win was that I chipped and putted really well but it was a real surprise to win and it’s my first major.

“I was even more delighted for Dean. He started hitting a ball with plastic clubs when he was just three and he’d play every day if he had the chance.

“I am extremely proud of him.”
