MORE than 130 players took part in this year’s Gateway to Wales Spring Golf Festival Northop, Hawarden and Holywell golf clubs.

The three-day event, supported by North Wales Tourism and Flintshire County Council Leisure & Tourism, attracted golfers from all over the UK. The three-day aggregate prize of £150 and the title The Gateway to Wales Spring Golf Festival 4BBB Champions 2019, sponsored by the Springfield Hotel & Health Club, was won by Nuneaton members Simon Rawbone and Darren Wardle with 132 points.

The consistent duo scored 45 points at Northop, 43 points at Hawarden and 44 points at Holywell. The Springfield also sponsored an Aggregate Mixed prize which was won by Tytherington Golf Club’s Paul and Carol Gadd with 129 points.

Paul and Carol were also the individual day winners at Northop with 49 points, second were Alder Root’s Chris Greenwood and Carl Walker on 46 points, while overall winners Simon and Darren were third with 45 before being winners at Hawarden on day two with their 43-point haul. Second were Knott End’s Paul Wardle and Edgar Winterbottom on 43 along with Nuneaton’s Neil Coleman and Fraser Plowman. Day three winners at Holywell were Grange Park’s Sam Marsden and Tom Stanley on 49 points, four better than fellow Grange Park members Mark and Dan Morgan with Simon and Darren third again.

Northop Golf Club director and club secretary Tony Godden, who is also part of the Gateway to Wales Golf team, said: “As a voluntary group representing Padeswood & Buckley, Mold, Old Padeswood, Hawarden, Northop and Holywell, we have been working on this event for 18 months. We were delighted with the response as 95% of the entries were visitors to the county who stayed locally providing a boost to local tourism too.

“We would particularly like to thank all those members of each of the golf clubs involved who worked so hard on the day to demonstrate what a welcome and hospitality our visitors to Flintshire can enjoy.”

Gateway to Wales Golf will be holding their Autumn Golf Festival on September 27-29 at Padeswood & Buckley, Mold and Old Padeswood golf clubs. The event will be sponsored by the Beaufort Park Hotel, Mold. Entry costs just £75 per pair to play in all three.
