Flintshire schoolgirl makes the cut

MOLD Golf Club junior golfer Annabel Collis has been selected to be part of the Wales Golf Under 16 `Aspire’ girls coaching squad.

Annabel, 15, a pupil at Castell Alun School, started her golfing journey at Mold Golf Club, attending the club’s Wales Golf funded beginner lessons which are held every year with the Mold’s PGA pro Craig Tudor. Annabel has gone on to represent both her club and county for many years, starting her competitive play with the Denbighshire and Flintshire Annual Rabbits Jamboree when she was just 10 years old. Annabel, who is joined at Mold by her dad Andrew and brothers Michael and Austin, all keen golfers themselves, has been a member of the Girls’ County Team in the Welsh Inter County U16 Championships for the last two years.

She said: “I am proud to have been selected for the Wales Golf Aspire squad. I have worked hard to practice all elements of my game under the guidance of my Wales Golf coach. I am grateful for the continuous support from the Mold Golf Club community, and especially junior managers John Roberts and Marie Moore. I aim to use this opportunity to improve my golf further over the next 12 months.”

Despite this year’s pandemic, Annabel has been extremely committed to her golf, reducing her handicap to 6.3. The highlight of the year has been finishing runner-up in the Welsh Girls Under 16 Championship at North Wales Golf Club in August. Annabel had the same score as the winner, but missed out on the second round score.

Marie Moore, junior girls manager at Mold, said: “It has been my privilege to have seen Annabel’s progress from starting in beginner lessons and progressing to representing Denbighshire and Flintshire County. She is an absolute delight, has a wonderful personality, always encouraging to others, and has a great attitude and commitment to her golf. This is a well deserved selection.”

Mold Golf Club has a long history of developing junior golfers of all ages and abilities via its Junior Academy.
