Gillum sets new record on way to county win

LILLESHALL Hall’s Katrina Gillum broke the ladies’ course record at Shrewsbury Golf Club on her way to winning this year’s Shropshire Ladies’ County Golf Championships.

The 19-year-old from Newport shot a two-under-par round of 71, which included seven birdies, in the opening qualifying round of the event late last month and then eventually went on to win a tight knockout match against club-mate Lucy Evans, 20, in the final.

Seeded number one, the 19-year-old qualified for the knockout stages of the competition with a 151 gross over the two rounds of medal play and played great golf in three knockout rounds to reach the final.

The final saw Gillum take an early lead, before three-handicapper Evans brought the match to all square at the end of the first nine. However, Gillum was not to be denied and she emerged victorious on the 17th to become this year’s champion.

“I’m delighted to have won the championship and played some good early rounds that put me in a strong position,” she said.

“I’d like to thank my playing partners throughout the week and Lucy for a tough final, she played well. I’d also like to thank Ashley, my brother for his skill as my caddy and Shrewsbury Golf Club for the fantastic course conditions that made the championship challenging,” she added.

Gillum’s superb performance throughout the competition saw her presented with a range of trophies including the Jean Barrowclough Cup, for the leader of the first round, aged under 30 years, the Nina Howells Salver, for the leader over the first two qualifying rounds and the Lady Forester Cup for winning the championship.

Janet Sadler, county lady president, said: “We have had a great championship with some terrific golf being played. Sheila Parker, ladies’ county treasurer and chair of the Ladies’ Handicapping Authority, has worked hard to organise this great championship for Shropshire Ladies County Golf Association and we extend our heartfelt gratitude to Shrewsbury Golf Club for hosting the event.

“I would like to congratulate Katrina on her victory and Lucy for a very exciting final.”

Tina Robinson, Shrewsbury Golf Club’s lady captain, said: “It was a pleasure to host the Ladies County Championship at Shrewsbury Golf Club this year. We have seen excellent golf from the best players in the County with the ladies’ course record being broken.

“The championship culminated in an exciting final with a tight finish and both Katrina and Lucy treated us to a display of world class golf.”
