FAIRFIELD Golf and Sailing Club celebrated in style at the official opening of their magnificent new clubhouse.
Cutting the ribbon was local MP Andrew Gwynne, who had played a big part in the club’s long battle for survival, which was concluded successfully in 2002.
Gwynne was then one of the youngest-ever councillors in Tameside and he followed his own instincts in supporting the club along with top names such as Sir Gerald Kaufman and John Prescott.
Introducing Gwynne and Sir Gerald was Fairfield stalwart Dave Leonard who had been at the heart of the club’s survival and redevelopment of its course and clubhouse over many years.
Leonard spoke passionately about the hard work put in by so many members and the support the club had received in very difficult times and how they could look forward to a very bright future.
Equally sincere and moving speeches were then given by Gwynne and Sir Gerald before a full house of members and guests were then able to enjoy a great evening to celebrate the official opening.
