Haydock amateur wins county title

IAN Kenwright from Haydock Park Golf Club won the biggest prize of his life when he led from wire to wire in the 2015 Lancashire Amateur Championship at Bolton.

And he attributed his success to dad Peter, long-serving professional at Haydock Park, who over the past three winters had changed his swing and improved his consistency.

“He also worked on the mental side of the game and gave me more self-belief,” said 31-year-old Kenwright who also had to thank his mum Jan who walked round with him for the last two rounds.“She helped to keep me focused and was a calming influence when I felt a bit of pressure,” he admitted.

Kenwright got off to a flying start with a three-under-par 67 on the first day and stayed in pole position after following up with scores of 71 and 72.

At one stage in the final round he was six ahead. He then let down his guard with a run of bogeys on the home stretch after struggling with the pace of the greens but he still finished two ahead with a four-over-par total from county team-mate Ciaran Doherty, from Bury.

“It made it interesting towards the end and I was happy to get over the line,” said Kenwright who described his victory as the highlight of his golfing life, which has seen him win six Northern Order of Merit titles. But he has no immediate plans to join his dad in the pro ranks.“I’m happy playing in national and county events,” he added.

The lowest score of the tournament was a six-under-par 64 in the third round by former double champion John Carroll, from Huyton & Prescot, which helped him into a share of third place alongside host club player Gareth Hastie.
