Historic venue for county season opener

ONE of Lancashire’s most historic courses will host the opening fixture of the new golf season.

Southport & Ainsdale – a Ryder Cup venue back in 1933 and 1937 – will stage the traditional curtain-raiser to the county season tomorrow (March 24).

A Rest of Lancashire team will meet the Southport District Golf Association over the famous old links which were established in 1906.

The James Braid designed course has seen a number of changes over the winter months with new dunes introduced on the first and 18th holes.

Lancashire will be the venue for the first big county junior event of the summer, with the Four Counties Junior Tournament at Lancaster on April 9-11.

The Red Rose major championships see the county title fought out over the Formby links from May 31-June 2, the Seniors compete at Hutyon & Prescot on June 10-11 and the Boys’ event at Ashton Under Lyne on May 19.

Lancashire Seniors begin their season against Shropshire at Ashton & Lea on May 10 with the full county side teeing off against neighbours Cheshire at Wallasey two days later.

Ormskirk hosts the northern seniors qualifier in July while Liverpool course Lee Park will see the U16 and U14 titles decided in August before Hesketh stages the County Foursomes finale.

New appointments for the season include Seniors team Captain Tony Holt, of Clitheroe Golf Club, a three-time winner of the Lancashire Seniors Championship, while the new Chairman of Juniors is Mike Carney of Morecambe Golf Club.
