Holyhead to host special fundraiser

HOLYHEAD Golf Club will host the fourth Gordon Taylor Charity Golf Day next month.

The event, which takes place on Saturday, August 3, was established in 2016, by friends and fellow golfers of Gordon Taylor, after he suffered a life changing illness in July, 2015.

Prior to being taken ill, he was a keen golfer and member of the Anglesey-based club. However, the impact of his illness and long-term health and mobility issues, mean he is now unable to play.

The event has now become a charity fixture on the Holyhead calendar and has raised more than £13,500 to date.

Monies raised have gone to supporting Gordon’s rehabilitation and mobility needs, as well as the local hospital, Ysbyty Penrhos Stanley, where Gordon was a patient for many weeks and from which he still receives support and treatment.

Ann Murphy, a trustee for the golf day, said: “A specialist chair for stroke patients was purchased last year, and this year, after discussion with the hospital, we will be purchasing Dyson fans for the wards. We will also support Holyhead and Anglesey Weightlifting and Fitness Club, where Gordon has support with exercise, by purchasing exercise matting for the facility.

“Hopefully the weather will be kinder to those on the course than it was last year, when we saw heavy rain and strong winds.

“Despite the weather, 140 club members, friends and ex-colleagues all started the course in support of this great event. We look forward to another good day and the company of everyone in the clubhouse for the raffle, auction and presentation after the competition.”
