ALTHOUGH it can be the most frustrating sport on the planet, golf has been proven to be good for your health…

Last year a global consensus amongst leaders in public health recognised/supported the sport of golf to tackle physical inactivity and aid the prevention of illnesses such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer of the breast and colon.

Research has also highlighted that those that play golf live longer than those that don’t play, while Wilmslow Golf Club membership chair Dr Peter Madden highlights some key statistics relating to golf health benefits:

 A person takes well over 12,000 steps in an 18-hole round of golf

 A male golfers burns 2000 calories during 18 holes

 A female golfer burns approximately 1500 calories

 Walking 2.5 hours per week reduces the risk of having a heart attack by up to 40%

 Regular golf improves mood and decreases anxiety and depression

 Recent studies suggest that golfers have a 40% lower death rate, which corresponds to five-year increase in life expectancy

As a result the health benefits the Royal & Ancient (golf’s governing body) have launched the first ever Golf and Health Week which will take place next week (April 15-19) and will aim to encourage golfers, non-golfers and lapsed golfers into taking part in the sport.

The campaign is supported by numerous golfing and sporting bodies including The European Tour, The Ladies European Tour, The Professional Golfers’ Association, the Golf Foundation, England Golf, Scottish Golf, Wales Golf, the Golfing Union of Ireland, the Irish Ladies Golf Union, European Disabled Golf Association, the PGAs of Europe and Golf Australia.

The Wilmslow Golf Club is also supporting this campaign and as a result is offering various golf health incentives to the local community, starting on Monday, April 15:

 Lapsed golfers (Non-members) = 50% Discount green fee rate £35 per person
