In-form Archie has high hopes

By Geoff Garnett

A JUNIOR member of Stamford and Bramhall golf clubs is hoping 2016 proves as successful as 2015.

Archie Palmer, 15, reduced his handicap from five to two in 2015 and one of his aims for the 2016 season is to reach scratch. His best competition result came in the North of England U16 championships at Heswall where he finished in second place in a field attracting 164 top young players from the North Region.

Archie was a regular for the Cheshire U16 team and in the Mid Cheshire Junior League he helped Bramhall to the title and was unbeaten in all of his matches. He won Bramhall’s President’s Day competition and was third in the Men’s Scratch Championship. Other successes came as he won the Lancashire Schools (South East) U16 title, and in the Delamere Forest Junior Open he finished second with a level gross score and was runner-up in the Ashton-under-Lyne Open.

Archie has been selected for the England U16 coaching squad for 2016 and is currently taking part in winter coaching with Didsbury pro and county tutor Peter Barber and strength and conditioning coaching from Nick Jones.

Archie, who is also a member of the Cheshire U18 team, will take his GCSE exams this summer with the aim of progressing to college and then on to university in the USA.

He said: “I would like to thank Peter Barber for his on-going support, the coaching and support team of England Golf and the Cheshire Union, the junior organisers at Bramhall, my dad for his coaching and of course my mum for her never-ending support.”
