A LANCASHIRE-based singer has challenged Radio 2 breakfast show and Top Gear presenter Chris Evans to a game of golf to try and help raise the profile of golf amongst all women.
Ashleigh Wood, from Crag Bank, near Morecambe challenged the 49-year-old Warrington-born star by writing to him. She included a copy of her latest cd and some photos of her playing golf.
The 23-year-old explained: “I started playing golf when I was seven years old at Bentham Golf Club. I was the only girl on the course as there weren’t any others playing. I found this to be a real shame.”
The 12-handicapper who now plays at Morecambe added: “I got into golf because my whole family plays. My dad has a handicap of six, my mum’s off 19 and my brother’s off 10. You could say we are a very competitive family, however golf practice wasn’t top of my list as I wanted to be doing what my friends were doing and this certainly wasn’t playing golf!”
She stuck with golf though and recently won the Lady Captain’s Prize at Morecambe where she will get her name up on a board in the clubhouse. She also joined forces with fellow lady member Jane Airey to win a foursomes event, came top in a recent EWGA medal and also teamed up with brother Curtis to win a president’s mixed event.
Ashleigh, who has just released a new single called ‘Bring Me Sunshine’, is keen to involve more women in golf and to raise the profile of golf amongst all women, with special emphasis placed on getting girls into the sport and keeping them interested as they become young women.
She has recently signed up to teach the juniors at her local club and supports her club’s initiative to provide women’s group golf lessons.
Proceeds from her latest track will go towards getting the juniors interested in golf and providing lessons. She is also planning a UK golf tour later this year.
