LEIGH Golf Club were celebrating long and hard after their Mail on Sunday ladies team won the national title at the Hotel and Golf Rompido in Southern Spain for the first time in the club’s long history.
Having shaken off a field of around 1,500 golf clubs nationally and coming through nine rounds; Leigh were one of four ladies’ teams that reached the national finals.
Following a close semi-final match with Burntisland, which Leigh won 3.5-1.5, they faced Bude and North Cornwall in the final.
Leigh demonstrated the great team spirit, which had seen them beat Ashton-in-Makerfield, Shaw Hill, Alsager, Ringway, Formby Ladies, Ulverston, Llanymynech and Howley Hall, to bring home a 4-1 win.
The Leigh team was made up of seven players, which comprised team captain Mhairi Ferrol, Nikki Martin, Rachel Higson, Heather Pirrie, Joanne Lennox Warburton, Penny Moorfield and Tracey Sherwood who all contributed to this success over the nine rounds.
Team captain Ferrol said: “The incredible team spirit and camaraderie which got us to this point were carried through to take us to victory in the final.
“We came through nine rounds to reach Spain and began to believe that we could go all the way after a great victory at Formby Hall ladies in round six. And went all the way to make this fantastic achievement.”
