Leyland captains record benefits young cancer patients

CARE for the region’s teenagers and young adults struggling with cancer is set to be enhanced, thanks to the record breaking efforts of Leyland’s golf captains.

The 2015 captains of Leyland Golf Club, Tim Pilkington and Marie Hayes, last month presented a cheque for £19,600 to the Christie Hospital Manchester. The money is designated to be used within the Young Oncology Unit (YOU) which treats teenagers and young adults (up to 24 years of age) with cancer and related illnesses.

For their charity nominations, Tim and Marie opted for a joint effort, supporting the Leyland-based Ross Tomlinson Foundation and succeeded, through a year-long programme of fun and fundraising, in raising the record sum.

The Foundation was set up in the memory of Leylander Ross to support the work of the YOU unit at The Christie. Ross, who tragically lost his battle with cancer in 2012 aged 21, underwent three years of intensive treatment and care at the unit.

Tim explained: “I have known the Tomlinson family a long time, I knew Ross well, he played golf at Leyland. It was an obvious choice and Marie, who also has connections, agreed to combine our efforts. As a result, we have raised an exceptional amount and everyone is delighted.”

The money was raised though Captain’s Golf days and dinners, Easter Egg raffles, coffee mornings, senior competitions and much more.

Tim and Marie were joined by Ross’s parents Linda and Mitch in handing the cheque over to Rebecca Jones, fundraising development manager of The Christie Charity. Rebecca said: “This is a fantastic donation, which will be put to specific use in developing the communal, social spaces of the young adults’ unit. We are very grateful to everyone who has helped and contributed in any way towards this donation.”

Linda added: “We have been overwhelmed by the general response to our original appeal in Ross’s memory. This donation from the golf club means we have now raised over £100,000 for the Young Oncology Unit. It’s inspirational and beyond our wildest expectations.”
