ASHTON-under-Lyne Golf Club has a long-standing tradition of developing and encouraging a thriving junior section. One of their top products has been Matthew Nixon, the British Boys champion, and now an established member of the European Tour.
Matthew has never forgotten his golfing roots with frequent returns to his club to encourage the junior section. He recently offered a full day of his expertise, wisdom and experience to their very successful crop of juniors who include England junior internationals Louisa Brunt and Luke Kelly.
He was joined by fellow professional Darren Wright and they played four holes with each group during the morning session.
In the afternoon they hosted two separate master classes for the juniors on the second hole with Matthew showcasing his incredible short game and Darren offering tips from the tee. Then back in the clubhouse Matthew presented the juniors with their trophies for the 2014 season. Winners were: Jack Walsh (Stewards Cup), Freddy Kelly (Easter Trophy), Sam Brierley (Junior Captain’s Prize), Liam Shuttleworth (Balfour Cup), Amie McGee (Junior Hall Cup), Amie McGee (Mike Kelly Cup), Emily Barlow (Junior Masters), Spencer Yates (Jim Howarth Cup);
Freddy Kelly (Junior Cup) and Emily Barlow (Junior Knockout). European Tour pro Matthew Nixon on the 18th green with a group of juniors: Liam Shuttleworth, Louisa Brunt; Jack Walsh, Josh Jones, Luke Kelly, Fred Kelly, Amie McGee, Emily Barlow, Sam Brierley, Joe Jones and Paddy Stubbs.
