THE Worshipful Mayor of the Borough of Trafford, Cllr Judith Lloyd and the Mayoress Ms Noelle Ryder were special guests at the official re-opening of Altrincham Driving Range earlier this month.
The driving range, located at Altrincham Golf Course, was handed back to Trafford Council in February to be managed by Trafford Leisure, the council’s Community Interest Company.
Since the handover, the council and Trafford Leisure have made significant investment and completed substantial works to the facility to deliver a first class service there, including the recruitment of a new team.
New resident golf professional, James Curtis, has been welcomed to the range. James and his team offer a wide selection of tuition and lesson packages aimed at encouraging the whole community to get into golf.
Chief operating officer for Trafford Leisure, Jo Cherrett, welcomed the Mayor and thanked her for attending the event and re-opening the driving range. Ms Cherrett outlined the vision for golf and the significance the range can play by saying: “The driving range allows us to fully provide a complete golf offer for the community.
“For a sport like golf, the importance of learning to play the game is paramount and as such we are hugely excited to have this facility under our management. The range allows us to offer ‘golf for all’ and we are encouraging everyone, all ages, abilities and gender to come and learn and play.”
Following Ms Cherrett’s introduction and welcome the Mayor proceeded to open the range, marked by the cutting of a ribbon.
Curtis then guided the Mayor and Mayoress to one of the bays for a quick beginners’ lesson.
Paul Murray, general manager for the golf courses, added: “Since we took over the range in February we have worked really hard to get the facility up to standard and open.
“There has been a massive input from everyone; including Trafford Council, the greenkeepers, shop staff and the new coaching team led by James.
“I’m excited for the future of golf in Trafford, and the opening of the range is just the start of the plans we have for delivering ‘golf for all’.”
