National award for Prestbury

PRESTBURY Golf Club were one of only three UK clubs to win a 2015 Golf Environmental Project Award, organised by the Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI).

The Prestbury entry won a trophy and a Certificate of Excellence in the Environmental project of the Year category.

There were 163 golf clubs across the UK who entered the competition, and of these 25 were considered good enough to reach the finals and merit a visit from the STRI adjudicator.

The Prestbury project attracted favourable attention after a three-year programme to eradicate the invasive Himalayan Balsam plant from the course and its grounds.

This weed is particularly aggressive and fast spreading and suffocates all the native plants in the areas over which it can rapidly spread.

Having cleared this weed there has been a transformation in the woodlands of the Prestbury course with the emergence of bluebells and other indigenous plant life and the resurgence of birds and small mammals into the area.
