OLLIE Claireaux wasn’t fazed by the large crowd of family, friends and members that gathered to watch him drive off as the new junior captain at Chester Golf Club.
The 16-year-old A-Level student first got into golf after being encouraged by his grandad Peter Hopkins, who is the Curzon Park club’s junior organiser.
Ollie, who plays off five, said: “Being junior captain is a huge honour for me as it shows the confidence the club has in me to represent them. As junior captain I will lead our junior team to try and retain our President’s Shield Trophy and at the same time play with and encourage the younger golfers to build a team for the future.”
Although he has only been playing for three years, he can already lay claim to beating Spanish Ryder Cup star Miguel Angel Jimenez in an event in Turkey.
“I played in a European Tour Turkish Airlines Pro-Am alongside Jimenez, where I shot a three-under-par 69 in front of several hundred people and a few thousand on the 18th green. He scored a 71.”
Ollie, who has been selected for county coaching this year, has a long term golfing goal to play professionally.
