Ormskirk to host double header

THE links between the professional and amateur golfers in Lancashire have been given a boost as both the PGA in Lancashire County Professional Championship and the Amateur Championships will be hosted by Ormskirk.

The work of the Lancashire County Partnership between Phil Harvey (LUGC) and Andy Duncan (Lancs PGA) in getting both codes to work closer together has produced a fantastic joint effort for Ormskirk to set a new county first by hosting both championships in the same season.

The Amateur Championship will take place at the end of May and the PGA Championship in September when Hart Common’s Steve Parry will defend the title that has been running since 1972 with past champions such as Paul Eales, Ged Furey and Chubby Chandler.

Duncan said: “The strength in both the Lancashire County amateurs and professionals was evident last year with the amateurs winning the national team championships and the professionals just missed out by a shot at The Belfry in the equivalent tournament.

“It will be great to see the best of both Lancashire amateurs and pros fighting it out at one of Lancashire’s finest courses for their respective championships.”

Jack Hammond, Ormskirk’s long-serving and well respected professional, added: “The club is delighted to be the first to host both championships in the same season and I am sure that we will provide a perfect stage both on and off the course for the two top competitions.”
