Prince’s crowning glory

SAM Prince reigned supreme on his way to claiming the coveted Galvin Green Northern Order of Merit crown last season.

But few had even heard of the 21-year-old Northenden player until he burst on to the scene with a string of impressive performances.

“I guess I came from nowhere,” he admitted after topping the table by 100 points from Formby’s England international Paul Kinnear.

But he was already appearing on the radar after finishing 13th in his first shot at the series in 2014.

“I was pleased with that and I guess I was starting to get noticed,” said Prince, encouraged to take up the game as a 12-year-old by his seven-handicapped dad at Altrincham where he was coached in Dan Whittaker.

He moved to Northenden after landing a part-time job in the pro’s shop and going under the tutelage of former European Tour player at nearby Didsbury.

“He has really improved my game,” said plus two ranked Prince who is also making a mark with Cheshire and is county player of the year.

But it was in the Northern Order of Merit where he excelled, picking up points on a regular basis thanks to several high finishes and had one hand on the trophy after winning at Bolton Old Links with two fixtures remaining.

Meanwhile the series continues to grow as it attracts the region’s best amateurs, a record 160 figuring in the points last season.

Prince, who will spend a few weeks practising in Portugal early next year, also plans to compete in national tournaments in a bid to attract the England selectors.

But he will not turn professional until he is ready.

“I enjoy playing amateurs events,” he added.
