IT IS fairly uncommon for golf clubs to have a husband and wife serving as captain and lady captain during the same year, but Fairfield Golf Club have gone one step further by having husband, wife and son in office at the same time!
Captain Stewart and lady captain Nicky Proffitt, who have been members for a combined total of almost 60 years, have been joined in office by 15-year-old son Josh as junior captain.
Stewart has also worked as both greenkeeper and steward at Fairfield. The former scratch golfer, who currently plays off three, said: “Fairfield has been a big part of my life for 40 years, it has evolved tremendously over the years and has always had amazing, friendly members at the core.”
Nicky, who plays off 11, is looking to get down to single figures this year. She grew up playing at Denton with her mum and dad then joined Fairfield after meeting Stewart.
They will be supporting Rueben’s Retreat as their charity. Nicky explained: “Reuben’s Retreat helps children and their families with life-limiting illnesses. It’s a charity that’s very close to my heart and I try to do as much as I can to help raise money.
“I am climbing Mount Snowdon again this year to kick off our fundraising and every penny we raise counts to renovate the Retreat they can build to help those children and families get through the most difficult of times.”
Josh, an Audenshaw High School student, has played golf seriously for the past three years. He said: “My goal is to play in the Dunham Forest team when I am old enough so I am working on getting a handicap to single figures and I would love to win the Tameside League or BMW team match.”
The Manchester United fan, who plays football for Medlock Rangers, added: “I am looking forward to the season ahead and being junior captain with mum and dad in their roles.”
