Reid named Lancashire president

By David Birtill

DR STEVEN Reid, a retired general medical practitioner, has been appointed president of the Lancashire Union of Golf Clubs.

A member of Royal Lytham and St Annes since 1965, he served as captain in the 1996 Open Championship year.

Reid, who will take office next March, was the R&A chief medical officer, retiring from the role after last year’s Walker Cup.

He is almost as renown as a historian, having written several books including Bobby’s Open, which won the 2013 Times Sports Book of the Year.

Reid penned an account of the Open Championship at Royal Lytham in 1926 when Jones, an amateur and three-time Claret Jug winner, hit that famous shot from the bunker at the 17th to help him win the title.

A plaque to commemorate the shot can be seen in the bunker.
