Tommy’s home to host the Betfred British Masters

IMPORTANT dates? Thursday, May 9, to Sunday, May 12. The venue? The magnificent links course at Hillside Golf Club, in Southport. The event? The Betfred British Masters.

Hosted, as has become the tradition with The Masters in recent years, by a local hero. Already a Ryder Cup star of note, and a real presence on golf’s global stage. Southport’s very own Thomas Paul Fleetwood – ‘Tommy’ to admirers all over the world.

Following the reintroduction of the British Masters into golf’s European Tour schedule, top names in the game such as Ian Poulter, Luke Donald, Lee Westwood and most recently Justin Rose, have hosted the event.

Now it’s the turn of 28-year-old Fleetwood, who grew up in the area, and after a distinguished amateur career has made a huge impact in the professional ranks. Still in his 20’s, Fleetwood will hopefully mount a serious bid to lift the title currently held by his good friend Eddie Pepperell, who is all out for a repeat win himself.

Fleetwood said of Pepperrell: “He’s the defending champion, it was his second win last year, and I think it was his most impressive performance to date. It’s great to have him at Hillside. To be named British Masters champion is a very special title to have, and he’s held the role brilliantly. We’re very lucky to watch him play again.”

Sponsors Betfred are breaking new ground as to their sponsorship portfolio, but as boss Fred Done explained, it’s a great fit.

“We at Betfred are delighted that such a local hero has taken the responsibility of helping bring world-class golf to the north-west, and as a company with our base and heritage hereabouts we’re really thrilled to be involved.

“Tommy is a smashing fella who is a cult figure not just here but all over the world. He’s just starting his career really, but he’s got that indefinable extra something that sets some players apart. Top golf is always headline news, and after Tiger’s heroics at Augusta there’s renewed interest. Players like Tommy help keep the excitement at very high levels. He’s our Tiger!

“He had an amazing Ryder Cup, cementing his place in the history of that great event, and he’s so often in and around the leaderboard at the sport’s biggest tournaments. I’m writing this some days before showtime, but it’s odds-on that Tommy will be amongst the favourites to lift the Betfred Masters.

“Events like this, and players like Tommy, inspire young people, and you just never know; amongst all the youngsters watching these fine players, some could end up being future superstars.”

Betfred will have an exhaustive array of markets for the Masters, from Outrights to Winning margins, cracking each-way opportunities, and how about Fleetwood to nab a hole-in-one? That’s an 80/1 chance, again at the time of writing.
