NORTH Wales Golf Range in Trefnant celebrated 28 years in business earlier this month and is still as popular as ever!
The business is currently run by Steve Mueller and his father Steve Snr.
Built on an old World War Two refuelling base and opened on February 1 1988, the driving range on the site was the first in the area and was built at a time when there were long waiting lists to become a member at a golf course.
“The idea was that the range gave people an affordable introduction to the game,” explained Steve. “It was such a popular facility that people were itching for more and begging for a golf course to compliment it,” he added.
The range and course were originally constructed by Lillian Gresley Jones and Brian Williams, who provided affordable golf to the masses. Brian said: “People were constantly asking us to use the land surrounding the driving range as a golf course, so I went out one day with a flymo just a year after we opened and cut out five greens to keep them happy! It proved very popular, so much so that we had to invest in sets of golf clubs to hire out as not many people in the area had any.” Soon after this, the course was designed and increased to nine holes.
Over the years the facility has evolved to suit its clientele, which ranges from tourists looking for a some holiday fun, right up to scratch golfers seeking to enhance their game even further.
In the last 12 months, a state-of-the-art golf simulator has been installed in the building, giving golfers feedback on their swing which would have been inconceivable back in the early days; there is a full time golf professional to help out all abilities of player; and after the maintenance of the course being done by Brian, Lily and more recently Steve and his father all these years, they have appointed a full time greenkeeper to keep the course up to standard.
So what’s next at the range? Steve said: “Communication has changed so much since the business was first established that we are now able to help golfers digitally. We are building up our Youtube channel, giving out golf tips and helping people improve, as well as getting involved with other forms of social media, while furthering our positioning as a golf practice facility; but the ethos of how it all started still remains – we are a facility for golfers to come and improve their game.”
