Tytherington duo win second national title

TYTHERINGTON duo Andy Stubbens and Michael Harrington have won the Nike Matchplay Betterball national title at Vale do Lobo, Portugal.

Their campaign started in the summer of 2014 and culminated in five days of sunshine and competition on the Algarve last month.

“It was the best experience I’ve had in golf to date,” said Andy, who plays off six.

“It felt like we’d won by just getting to Portugal, but once we were there, our competitive juices got flowing, and we played some great golf, winning quite comfortably in the end.”

It always helps when your partner has been and won the same competition in the past of course!

For Michael, a plus one handicapper, victory was even sweeter this time around. He said: “It was great, we loved every minute of it, to have been lucky enough to come back in the first place was brilliant, but to win it again is unbelievable.”

Over the four rounds of competition played on the magnificent Royal Course and the spectacular Ocean Course at the Vale do Lobo resort, the pair recorded 42, 43, 42 and 44 points to win by a handsome margin.

“We dovetailed brilliantly,” explained Michael. “I worked out that out of the 72 holes, we were on the card 36 times each. That’s what you call an equal pairing! Now I’m looking forward to trying to get back there with Andy and defend our title, it would be nice to get a hat-trick!”
