STAFF at the Ian Woosnam Academy, based at Malkins Bank Golf Course near Sandbach, are on the lookout for budding young golfers that might be interested in enrolling on one of its three courses this September.
Former Peover Golf Club pro Ed Parker is heading up the brand new academy that already has more than 12 students signed up as part of the first intake.
A two-year BTEC course, linked in with local colleges, will provide the students the chance to learn golf alongside a recognised BTEC course. It will involve training and skill-based learning and will cover aspects such as psychology, physiotherapy and strength and conditioning.
The course is open to 16-18 year olds and they will leave with a BTEC Level 3 extended diploma in sports performance and excellence.
The Golf Performance Year course is available for anyone over 16 looking to become a tour professional, single figure golfer or just simply looking to improve their game.
Ed said: “Anyone enrolling on this programme will receive a structured year tailored to each individual’s specifications and strengths and will be delivered by our team of professionals.”
The Junior Development Programme is suitable for under 15s. It’s aimed at juniors looking to develop their golf with a structured development plan throughout the year, whilst being able to carry on with their normal studies.
The academy, which already has a partnership with Newcastle College, has also teamed up with nearby Reaseheath College, in Nantwich. It will also be able to offer group lessons and one-on-one sessions.
Malkins Bank’s Kelly Lowe added: “Having the backing of someone so well known in golf like Ian Woosnam is obviously a big help and Ian was delighted to put his name to the academy and is a regular visitor.
“Ed’s been with us full-time since January and we’ve now created this new role of heading up the other five PGA pros who will be involved with the first intake of students.
“It’s a really exciting time to be involved with getting the brand known.”
