CHESHIRE star David Peel, from Stockport Golf Club, is delighted with the news that his own club and Wilmslow have received formal approval from the R&A that the inaugural 72-hole Cheshire Cat scratch event this year involving the two clubs has been given World Amateur Golf Ranking status. David said: The tournament is a joint venture between the two clubs. Wilmslow has previously hosted a very successful 36-hole scratch event, The Wilmslow Crow, which I won last year, and they wanted to raise the profile of the event to gain WAGR status. Stockport wanted to showcase their wonderful course and facilities to the golfing public and felt the best way to do this was by hosting a premier scratch event The Stockport Silver Salver combined with the Wilmslow Crow.
Both courses have been Open qualifiers, have hosted numerous county competitions and complement each other extremely well in terms of their standards and condition. I have competed in the Northern Order of Merit over the past 20 years and feel that the Cheshire Cat can attract the cream of the amateur game and have similar success to the Hampshire Hog, the Selbourne Salver and the Lancashire Links which are played early season on the national amateur calendar. Hopefully my experience in playing in these types of events will help the organisation and running of the new tournament.Ó The Stockport Silver Salver will take place on July 16 and The Wilmslow Crow the following day.
