A YOUNG Welsh golfer from Wrexham Golf Club has received yet another national team selection for the upcoming European Young Masters to be held on July 25-27 at Kuneticka Hora Golf Club in the Czech Republic which will see him compete with the best international U16 players in Europe.
Matthew Sandoz, 16, who has just finished his GCSEs at Castell Alun High School, has had an extremely strong first half of the season in numerous National events including the Scottish Boys U18s (13th place) and the Welsh Youths U21s (13th place) and the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters, where he finished fifth in a strong international field. This is the highest ever finish of a Wales player in this prestigious competition which attracts the best boys in Europe.
Earlier in the season Matthew represented Wales U18s, winning both his singles matches in a Wales victory against Ireland in Rosslare. Again representing Wales at the U16 Quadrangular in Troon in April, Matthew won five out of his six matches against the best U16 youngsters from Holland, Scotland and Ireland.
The scratch golfer has just returned from the European Boys Team Championships held at the Toya Golf Club, in Poland, where he was part of a victorious Wales team. Wales won the Strokeplay Qualifier edging out Scotland, where Matthew was 10th individually, the strong Wales Team then went on to matchplay section to beat Belgium in the semi-finals and Russia in the final to be crowned champions.
Matthew is coached by Gareth James, based at Clays Golf Club, near Wrexham and is supported in his strength and conditioning by local personal trainer Jason Vaughan based at Total Fitness in Wrexham. Both Gareth and Jason are part of the Wales Golf High Performance Team which provides a world class squad coaching system which Matthew has been part of since the age of nine.
